Queen Creek Resident Claims $1 Million Powerball® Second Prize Winning Ticket

PHOENIX (June 10, 2013) – The Arizona Lottery announces that the second $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket from the drawing on May 18 has been claimed by a woman from Queen Creek. This is the last of three second prize winning tickets to be claimed from the record-breaking $590.5 million Powerball jackpot run.

On Saturday, June 8, Valerie Sanchez decided to get her Powerball tickets from her car and check them for the draw on May 18. She got the surprise of a lifetime when she saw that one of the ten lines she purchased was a $1 million winner.

Sanchez is still in a state of shock, but plans to pay off her bills and get a new car. She will decide what to do with the rest of her winnings after she talks to her financial advisor. Her advice to other Lottery players is to “check your tickets!”

“We’re so happy that Valerie finally checked her ticket and claimed her $1 million prize,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “It’s been exciting to have more Powerball second prize winners in Arizona, especially our three most recent which occurred during the record-breaking jackpot run.”

Sanchez purchased her winning ticket at the Chevron located at 1990 S. Alma School Road in Chandler. This is the 24th $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012.

The redesigned $2 Powerball game offers many appealing features to players, including better overall odds and jackpots that grow bigger, faster. The starting jackpot doubled from $20 million to $40 million and the second prize for matching all five numbers, without the Powerball, increased from $200,000 to $1 million.

Players must be 21 years or older to purchase or redeem tickets. Winners have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their prize at an Arizona Lottery office or by mail. Overall odds vary by game. All sales are final. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, these materials may be made available in an alternate format. Gambling Problem? Golden Valley Man Strikes Black Gold

Robert McDonald of Golden Valley had the golden touch when he purchased his $500,000 winning Arizona Black Exclusive Scratchers. He’d won $500 on another Scratchers, but the store couldn’t cash it. He then went to another store to see if they could cash it, but the customer service counter wasn’t open, so he decided to wait. To keep himself occupied while he waited, he purchased one Arizona Black Exclusive from the Lottery vending machine.

Robert scratched the ticket while he was in the store, and as soon as the customer service counter opened and the people waiting in line had left, he quietly took the ticket over to the clerk to be validated. Somehow, he managed to drive home, although he was in a mild state of shock.

Once he got home, he called his son to tell him the news. His family was thrilled for him and drove him to the Lottery office to redeem the ticket. Robert, who is retired from the construction field, loves playing Scratchers because it’s a form of relaxation. He has no particular favorite, just buys whatever appeals to him at the time. He frequents stores in Kingman as well as Golden Valley.

Robert is considering purchasing a new home with some of his winnings and investing the rest. The winning ticket was purchased at Smith’s Food and Drug, 3490 N. Stockton Hill Road., Kingman.

PHOENIX (May 23, 2013) – The Arizona Lottery announces that one of the two $1 million Powerball second prize winning tickets from the drawing on May 18 has been claimed by a group of 15 co-workers from Safford. This is the 23rd $1 million Powerball second prize winning ticket sold in Arizona since $2 Powerball launched in January 2012 and one of three second prize winning tickets sold during the record-breaking $590.5 million Powerball jackpot run.

Three representatives of the 15-member office pool, who call themselves “The Safford Fortunate 15,” claimed the group’s winning ticket at the Arizona Lottery office in Phoenix. Donna Talley, Wendy Layton and Gloria Ogas were overjoyed with their win.

Talley purchased the winning Quick Pick® ticket at the Giant Service Station located at 300 E. U.S. Hwy. 70 in Safford. She received a call from a co-worker saying they had five matching numbers the morning after the draw. When she walked into the store after church on Sunday to check the tickets, the clerk said, “We’ve been waiting for you.”

Each member of the pool received a check for $46,666.90 after taxes.

“It was a thrill meeting the three women who came in to claim the office pool’s winning ticket,” said Karen Bach, director of budget, products, and communications for the Arizona Lottery. “They were extremely grateful, and it’s nice to know this win will benefit a group of 15 co-workers who will be able to celebrate and share in this wonderful experience together.”
